How much does it cost to run a toaster?

The toaster is one of the cheapest things in your kitchen to run, yet it is the appliance people fret about most when they hear it draws a kilowatt or more. The number on the back of the case looks alarming, but a toaster only pulls that power for a minute or two at a time, so the cost per round of toast is tiny. The standout point is how small these numbers are. Even the thirstiest four-slice toaster used daily costs about a tenner a year. That is a fraction of what a fridge freezer or a tumble dryer adds to your bill, and those run on for hours rather than minutes.

Why the high wattage does not mean a high bill

People see 2,000W on a four-slice toaster and assume it must be expensive. The wattage tells you how fast the appliance draws energy, not how much it uses overall. A 2,000W toaster running for two minutes uses less energy than a 100W lamp left on for seven hours.

This is the same trap people fall into with the kettle and the microwave. High-power kitchen gadgets are cheap to run precisely because they do their job and switch off in seconds or minutes. A toaster has no real standby draw worth worrying about.
