How much does it cost to run a microwave?

A microwave is one of the cheapest ways to heat food in your kitchen, yet most people have no idea what it actually costs to run. The number on the front of the machine is not the number that matters for your bill, and the standby clock quietly draws power around the clock. Once you know how to read the real figures, working out the cost takes seconds, and you can compare it fairly against the oven, the hob and the air fryer.

The short answer. Running a typical 800W (output) microwave for ten minutes a day costs roughly 9p at the July to September 2026 price cap, which is about £33 a year. A single two-minute reheat costs under 2p. The bigger annual surprise is usually the standby clock, which can add a few pounds a year on its own.

What a microwave actually costs to run

The wattage printed on the front of a microwave, often 700W, 800W or 900W, is the cooking output, not the power it draws from the wall. A microwave is not perfectly efficient, so the input power is higher. An 800W output machine typically pulls around 1,200W (1.2kW) from the socket when it is running on full power.

Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh is one kilowatt running for a full hour. To find the cost, multiply the input power in kilowatts by the time in hours, then by your unit rate. For a 1.2kW microwave running for two minutes (0.033 of an hour) at 26.11p:

  • 1.2 kW x 0.033 h = 0.04 kWh
  • 0.04 kWh x 26.11p = about 1p per two-minute reheat

Cost per use and per year at the price cap

The table below assumes a microwave drawing 1.2kW on full power, which suits most domestic 800W to 900W output models. Lower-output machines draw a little less, higher-output ones a little more, but the order of magnitude holds.

For most households, total microwave use lands somewhere between £15 and £35 a year depending on how often you reach for it. That figure does not include the standby clock, which we cover below. Reading the label: output watts versus input watts

This trips up almost everyone. A microwave has two power figures, and they mean different things.

  • Output power is the cooking power, the heat delivered to your food. This is the number on the front and in the cooking instructions on food packaging.
  • Input power is what the machine draws from the socket, and it is what your meter measures. It is always higher than the output.

You will usually find the input figure on the rating plate, a small label on the back or inside the door frame, written in watts or amps. If it lists amps, multiply by 230 to get watts (for example, 5.2A x 230 = about 1,200W). Use the input figure for any cost calculation. The standby clock can cost more than the cooking

Here is the quiet one. A microwave with a digital display and clock draws a small amount of power continuously, even when you are not using it, to keep the display lit and the controls awake. That draw is usually 1W to 3W.

It sounds trivial, but it runs 8,760 hours a year. At 2W, that is about 17.5 kWh a year, which works out at roughly £4.60 at the current rate. Compare that with the £19 example above for ten minutes of daily cooking, and you can see the clock is a meaningful slice of the total.

  • If you only cook with it occasionally, standby can be the larger share of your microwave's annual cost

You can kill it entirely by switching the machine off at the wall when it is not in use, though you lose the clock. Whether that is worth the faff is a personal call. Microwave versus oven, hob and air fryer

The microwave wins on small, quick jobs because it heats the food and almost nothing else. A conventional electric oven might draw 2kW to 3kW and needs preheating, so reheating one plate in the oven can cost ten to twenty times more than the microwave for the same result.

For larger batches or anything that needs browning, the picture shifts. An air fryer or the hob can be more efficient than the oven for medium portions, and the oven still wins on energy-per-portion once you are cooking for a crowd in one go. The honest rule is simple: match the appliance to the portion size. Small and fast favours the microwave; large and slow favours the oven.

  • Reheating one or two portions: microwave, every time
  • Defrosting: microwave, or the fridge for free if you plan ahead
  • Crisping or browning a small amount: air fryer
  • A full roast or a tray for the family: oven

The two things worth knowing are that the wattage on the front is the cooking output, not what your meter sees, and that the standby clock can quietly add a few pounds a year on top.
