Television and entertainment energy: what the living room really costs

The corner of the living room with the television, the box that feeds it, a games console and a sound system feels like it ought to be an energy drain. Parts of it are, though not always the parts you expect. The screen itself is usually modest in normal use. The bigger waste tends to hide in what those devices do when you think they are off. This guide breaks down what each piece actually costs at current UK prices, and where the easy savings sit.

The short answer. A modern television costs surprisingly little to watch, perhaps £15 to £45 a year for a few hours an evening, depending on size and brightness. The real waste hides in standby: a games console in instant-on mode or an older set-top box left half-awake can each draw 10 to 15 watts around the clock and quietly cost £23 to £34 a year, sometimes more than the television does in active use. What a television actually draws

A modern flat television is fairly efficient in use. Depending mostly on its size and how bright the picture is, it draws anywhere from a few tens of watts to a couple of hundred. A small set sips very little. A very large, very bright OLED or QLED in a dark room can draw noticeably more.

So the television is rarely the villain of the electricity bill. It is a steady, middling cost rather than a heavy hitter. You can quantify your own set with the running cost calculator once you know its wattage, which is on the rating label or measured with a plug-in energy monitor.

Screen size and brightness

Two settings move a television's consumption most: the size of the panel, which you cannot change, and the brightness, which you can.

A bigger screen has more area to light, so consumption climbs with size. That is fixed once you have bought the set. Brightness is the lever in your hands. Many televisions ship in a vivid, retina-searing shop-floor picture mode, set far brighter than any normal room needs, which burns more power for a picture that is often less pleasant to watch at home.

The fix costs nothing. Switch from the vivid or dynamic mode to a standard, home or cinema picture mode, and turn the backlight down to a comfortable level for your room. On many large sets that alone cuts the panel's draw by a third or more. Leave any automatic brightness or eco setting on too, as it dims the panel to suit the light in the room. You save money and usually get a more natural picture into the bargain.

The standby trap

Here is where the real waste tends to sit, and it is rarely the television.

Games consoles are the prime suspects. Left in a connected or instant-on standby so they can download updates overnight and wake in a second, some draw a meaningful amount around the clock, far more than a device that is genuinely off. Set-top boxes and digital recorders are similar, staying half-awake to record scheduled programmes and pull updates. Over a year, a console and a recorder idling in these modes can quietly cost more than the television does in active use.

Settings that cut the cost

The fixes are mostly free and take a few minutes.

  • On a games console, switch off the instant-on or connected standby in the power settings and let it power down fully when you finish. You accept a slightly longer start-up and that updates download when you next turn it on, in exchange for cutting a 10 to 15 watt round-the-clock draw to almost nothing.
  • On the television, use the standard picture mode and a lower backlight as above, and leave any eco or auto-brightness setting on.
  • On a set-top box, use any deep-standby or eco mode it offers. Some recorders have a setting that lets them sleep properly between scheduled recordings.
  • On a sound bar, the standby is usually small, so it is rarely worth chasing on its own.

Where a device has no good low-power mode, the answer is a switch.

The switched socket trick

If the box that feeds your television or the games console insists on drawing several watts even when you are not using it, the simplest fix is to put the whole cluster on a switched extension lead or a smart plug. One flick at the wall when you go to bed kills the lot.

A word of caution: do not put a digital recorder that has scheduled recordings on a hard switch, or it will miss them and lose its clock. And there is no need to switch off the television itself, since its standby is now trivial. The trick is to measure first with a plug-in energy monitor, find the two or three devices actually wasting power, and switch only those. Keeping it in proportion

The whole entertainment corner, watched sensibly with standby tamed, typically costs somewhere between £40 and £120 a year. That is real but modest, and most of it buys you something you actually use. It is dwarfed by heating, hot water and the kitchen, so do not lose sleep over an evening's telly.

The worthwhile moves are the free ones: drop the television's brightness, turn off instant-on standby on the console, and switch off the genuine standby offenders at the wall.
