Not every saving needs a contractor or a big spend. A handful of buys, none of them more than the price of a takeaway, each pay for themselves within a season or two, and stacked together they take a real slice off a bill. This is the shopping list, with what each item actually does, roughly what it costs to run or save, and how fast you get your money back. Spend a tenner at a time and watch it come back.
The short answer. The best sub-£10 buys are draught strips, a few LED bulbs, a chimney draught excluder for an unused fireplace, foam pipe lagging, radiator reflector panels on external walls, and a plug-in energy monitor to find your worst offenders. Most pay for themselves in a single winter, and several keep saving for years after that. Start with draughtproofing and lighting, then work down the list.
Why cheap fixes beat big projects on payback
A new boiler, solid wall insulation or solar panels can be worth doing, but they cost thousands and take years to pay back. The buys on this page cost a few pounds each and pay back in months because the saving is large relative to the price. A draught strip that costs £5 and saves even £15 of heat over a winter has returned three times its cost before spring.
None of these need skills or a trades visit. You fit them by hand on a weekend. And because you can buy one item at a time, you never have to find a lump sum. The trick is to start with the things that lose heat fastest in your particular home, which for most UK houses means draughts and lighting, then work down to the smaller wins.

The order matters. Draughtproofing and LEDs come first because the saving is biggest and fastest. The monitor pays for itself the moment it finds one genuinely hungry device, which most homes have.
Draught strips and excluders
A few pounds of self-adhesive foam or rubber strip seals the gaps around doors and windows, and a brush or excluder stops the draught under an external door. This is the classic quick win: cheap, quick to fit, and you feel the difference the same evening because the room holds its warmth and feels comfortable at a lower thermostat setting.
That last point is where the real money is. If draughtproofing lets you drop the thermostat by one degree, you save roughly 8 to 10 per cent of your heating bill. On a typical gas heating spend that is tens of pounds a year for a one-off £5 outlay. LED bulbs and the chimney balloon
A single LED bulb costs little and uses roughly a tenth of the electricity of the old halogen or incandescent it replaces, lasting for years. Swap an old 60W incandescent for an 8W LED and you cut about 52W every hour it is on. Run it four hours a day and that is around 76 kWh saved a year, near £20 off your electricity at 26.11p per kWh, from a bulb that cost a couple of pounds. Replace the bulbs in the rooms lit longest first, the kitchen and living room, and buy them one or two at a time.
An open, unused chimney is one of the biggest draughts in the house, letting warm air stream out around the clock. A chimney balloon or wool draught excluder costs only a few pounds and plugs the gap while letting the flue breathe a little. Remember to remove it before lighting a fire. For a house with a redundant fireplace, this is a surprising amount of saving for very little money, because a flue is effectively a permanent hole to the outside that runs day and night, in summer as well as winter.
Pipe lagging, reflectors and the bleed key
Foam pipe lagging slips over exposed hot-water pipes for a pittance and keeps the water hot on its way to the tap, while also protecting cold pipes from freezing. If you have a hot-water tank, a cylinder jacket is one of the fastest paybacks of all, stopping heat you have paid for from leaking away while the tank sits waiting. Both fit by hand and save every day.
Behind radiators on external walls, a reflector panel or even foil on card bounces heat back into the room instead of letting it soak into the cold wall. The saving per radiator is small, so only bother with the ones on outside walls, but at a few pounds it is still worth doing.
The smallest buy of all still earns its place. A radiator bleed key costs under £2 and lets you bleed trapped air so radiators heat fully and the boiler works less. There is nothing cheaper that makes your existing heating work better.
The plug-in energy monitor: the one that finds the others
This buy does not save energy by itself; it tells you where to look. A cheap plug-in monitor sits between an appliance and the socket and shows exactly what it draws, revealing the hungry devices and the worst standby offenders so you act on facts rather than guesses. Find one old set-top box or a second fridge in the garage left running, and it pays for itself many times over.
A worked example: a constantly running device drawing 60W costs about 60 ÷ 1000 × 24 × 365 × 0.2611, which is roughly £137 a year. No single item here transforms a bill. The point is that they stack. Spend a few tenners across a winter on draught strips, a handful of LEDs, a chimney balloon, some pipe lagging and a monitor, and you have spent perhaps £30 to £40 for savings that repeat every year, often £100 or more combined in a leaky home.
