A high gas bill almost always comes down to one of a very short list, because gas in most homes does only two things: it heats the house and it heats the water. There is no mystery gadget quietly running up a gas bill in the background the way a tumble dryer can with electricity. So when the number jumps, the cause is usually the heating running more, an estimated reading catching up with reality, or the price per unit having moved. I have picked apart a good few of these, and you can normally put a name to the extra cost in an evening with nothing more than your meter and a couple of old bills.
The short answer. Gas is priced at about 7p per kWh under the Ofgem cap for July to September 2026, and heating plus hot water make up almost all of a typical home's use. A high bill is nearly always one of four things: the heating ran more (colder weather or longer hours), the bill is estimated rather than metered, the boiler is running hotter or longer than it needs to, or the unit rate and standing charge went up. Gas does only two jobs, so the list of causes is short
The first thing worth holding onto is how narrow the gas story is. In the great majority of homes, gas feeds the boiler and nothing else, or the boiler plus a gas hob. The hob barely registers, using a tiny fraction of what the boiler gets through. So somewhere north of nine tenths of your gas goes on central heating and hot water. That is good news when you are hunting a high bill, because it means you are not looking for a hidden appliance. You are looking at how much, and how hot, your heating and hot water have run, and at whether the figure on the bill is real or guessed. Everything below is a way of narrowing down which of those it was.
The commonest cause: an estimated reading
Before you assume you have used more gas, check whether the bill is based on a real meter reading or an estimate. If a supplier has not had an actual reading for a while, it estimates your use, and those estimates can drift a long way from reality. A run of low estimates followed by a real reading produces a catch-up bill that looks alarming but is really just the accumulated gap arriving at once. The reverse happens too: a spell of high estimates can leave you in credit you did not know about.
Look for the letter next to each figure on the statement. An "E" means estimated, an "A" or "C" means an actual or customer reading. If the big bill is built on estimates, take a reading off the meter today and submit it. That replaces the guess with the truth and, more often than you would think, the corrected bill comes down. The weather did more of it than you think
If the reading is genuine and the bill still jumped, the next suspect is simply the weather. Gas central heating tracks the outside temperature closely, and a cold snap makes the boiler work far harder to hold the house at the same setting. The gap between a mild winter month and a cold one can be enormous, often a doubling of gas use for the same thermostat setting, because the house is losing heat faster and the boiler is topping it up more often and for longer.
This is why comparing your bill with last month is misleading, and comparing it with the same month last year is far fairer. December against November will always look like a spike; December against last December tells you whether anything has really changed. If this winter was colder than last, some of the rise is just the thermometer and there is nothing wrong. It also means the biggest lever you hold is the heating itself: hours, thermostat setting and how much heat the house leaks. Turning the thermostat down by a degree, and shortening the hours the heating is on, both cut gas noticeably, and cutting heat loss with loft insulation and draught-proofing cuts it for good.
Boiler settings can quietly inflate the bill
Two boiler habits push gas use up without anyone noticing, and both are worth checking. The first is the flow temperature, the heat of the water the boiler sends to the radiators. Many combi boilers leave the factory set to around 70 to 80 degrees, which is hotter than a home needs and stops the boiler condensing efficiently. Turning the flow temperature down to around 55 degrees lets the boiler run in its efficient condensing mode, so it wrings more heat out of each unit of gas. The second is simply running the heating longer than needed. Heating an empty house all day, or leaving it on overnight when a lower setting would do, burns gas for warmth nobody is using. Hot water is a bigger share than most people expect
Even in summer, when the heating is off, a gas bill is rarely zero, and that is the hot water showing up on its own. Heating water takes a surprising amount of energy, and long or frequent showers, baths and a heavily used hot tap all add up. The fixes are the same ones that always work for hot water: shorter showers, a lower cylinder thermostat if you have a hot water tank, and not leaving the hot tap running. The price, not just your usage
Sometimes you have not used more gas at all; it just costs more per unit. Gas is billed as a rate per kilowatt hour plus a daily standing charge you pay whether you burn any gas or not. The Ofgem price cap resets both every three months, and a fixed deal ending can drop you onto a different rate. How to name your own cause in an evening
Here is the order I would work through it. Start by reading the gas meter and writing down the figure with the date. Compare your recent bills side by side, and check the "E" or "A" letter on each: if the big one is estimated, submit today's reading and see if it corrects. If the reading is real, find the same month from last year and compare the kWh used, not the pounds, because that strips out any price change. If the kWh is much higher, it is a usage story, so look at how cold it was, how long the heating ran and what the flow temperature is set to. If the kWh is flat but the pounds are up, it is a price story, so look at the cap change or a tariff ending.
A worked example makes it concrete. Say last January you used 1,500 kWh of gas and this January you used 2,100 kWh, both from real readings. That is 600 extra units, or about £42 more at 7p a unit, and it points squarely at heating: a colder month, longer hours, or a hotter flow temperature. Now suppose instead the units were the same 1,500 both years but the bill rose by £30. That is not your boiler at all, it is the rate, and the fix is in the tariff, not the thermostat.
