I am Tom Fielding, and I write Power Saving Guide. I am independent, tied to no energy firm or comparison site, and I spend an unreasonable amount of time working out what appliances and habits actually cost to run.
There is no ex-British-Gas badge to wave here, and I am not going to invent one. What I have is stubbornness and a spreadsheet habit. I check every figure against Ofgem's current price cap, work the sums out longhand so you can follow them, and write it up plainly so you can cut your bills without the hand-wringing.
What I actually do
I take a claim, "leaving the heating on low all day is cheaper", "smart plugs save you a fortune", "boil only the water you need", and I run the numbers at the real unit rate. Sometimes the received wisdom holds up. Often it does not, or it saves so little that it is not worth the nagging. Either way you get the figure and my honest read on whether it is worth bothering with.
The house style is simple: lead with the answer and the money, keep it in plain English, and never dress up a few pence a year as a life-changing saving. If I think something is a waste of your time, I will say so.
Where the numbers come from
Running costs are worked from the current Ofgem price cap, 26.11p per kWh for electricity and 7.33p per kWh for gas over July to September 2026, and updated when the cap moves. Wattages come from appliance rating labels and manufacturer figures; where I have measured something with a plug-in energy monitor, I say so. Everything is a worked example to show the method and the scale, not a guarantee about your particular bill.
Independent, no strings
Nobody pays me for a favourable write-up. There is no energy supplier behind this site and no comparison deal steering the advice. Some outbound links may be affiliate links, flagged on the privacy page, but they never change a verdict.
