Fitting, compatibility and the running costs people forget
Before you buy, a few practical points decide whether a smart thermostat is straightforward or a faff in your home.
Compatibility. Most smart thermostats replace your existing wired thermostat or programmer and work with a standard gas combi or system boiler. Older systems, or some heat-only boilers, may need a bit more wiring. The poorest fit is a household at home all day on a fixed, settled routine, like a retired couple who already heat sensibly. There is simply far less waste for the device to find, so the saving is small.
Before you spend, weigh the cost against your own pattern honestly, and remember the free version. Setting your existing programmer to match your actual routine, turning the thermostat down a degree or two, turning radiators down in rooms you do not use, and switching the heating off when you go out delivers much of the same benefit with no kit at all.
