What every appliance costs to run: the full UK list

We took 46 common household appliances and worked out what each one actually costs to run for a year at the current price cap. The spread is the whole story: the most expensive thing in the average home costs several hundred pounds a year, the cheapest costs about the price of a coffee. Most energy advice has you fretting over the wrong end of this table.

Tap any column heading to sort. Costs use the Ofgem price cap of 26.11p per kWh (July to September 2026), and the kilowatt-hours assume typical use, shown in the table. Your own figures will differ with how hard and how often you run each thing, but the running order rarely changes.

At 26.11p per kWh, Ofgem price cap July to September 2026. Figures are typical full use; an old or hard-worked appliance costs more, an efficient or lightly used one less. The electric car and electric shower are per typical user. Worked examples, not a promise; measure your own with a plug-in monitor.

What the table actually tells you

Three lessons fall straight out of sorting by yearly cost. First, the things that make heat dominate: showers, dryers, immersion heaters, panel heaters and the rest sit at the top, because turning electricity into heat is expensive and there is no efficient way around it. Second, a few modest-looking devices cost more than you would think simply because they never switch off, like a fridge-freezer, an aquarium or a set-top box left on around the clock. Third, the gadgets people are told to fret about, the phone charger and the standby light, are at the very bottom, costing about a pound a year each.

The practical takeaway is the one the whole site is built on: chase the top of the table, ignore the bottom. Unplugging your phone charger to save 1 pound a year while a tumble dryer quietly costs over 120 pounds is effort spent in exactly the wrong place. Put your own appliances through the running cost calculator to get your real numbers, and if the bill itself looks wrong, work through why your electricity bill is so high.

For the big users specifically: the heating guides cover electric heat and hot water, and Economy 7 and night rates can cut the cost of anything you are able to run overnight.
