How much does it cost to run a pressure washer?

A pressure washer feels like it should be expensive to run. It makes a lot of noise, the motor strains, and the whole patio gets blasted clean in minutes. In reality the electricity bill from a typical job is tiny, often only a few pence, because you rarely run the machine for long and you almost never run it flat out the whole time. The figure that catches people out is not the electricity at all. It is the water, especially if you are on a meter. Once you can read the wattage on yours and account for the water, working out the true cost of a clean takes seconds.

The short answer. Running a typical 1.8kW electric pressure washer costs about 47p an hour at the July to September 2026 price cap. Most jobs are far shorter than that, so a 20-minute patio blast is roughly 16p of electricity. If you are on a water meter, the water you spray can cost as much as the power, sometimes more, so it is worth counting both.

What a pressure washer costs to run

Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh is one kilowatt of power running for a full hour. To find the cost of any appliance, multiply its power in kilowatts by the time you use it in hours, then by your unit rate.

Most domestic electric pressure washers draw between 1.4kW and 2.1kW, with the popular mid-range models landing around 1.8kW. Take a 1.8kW machine run flat out for a full hour at the 26.11p price cap rate:

  • 1.8 kW x 1 hour = 1.8 kWh
  • 1.8 kWh x 26.11p = about 47p for the hour

Hardly anyone runs a pressure washer for a solid hour, though. You squeeze the trigger in bursts, move the lance about, stop to refill the detergent, and the motor cuts out the moment you release the trigger on most machines. Cost per session and per year at the price cap

The table below assumes a 1.8kW machine, which covers most domestic electric pressure washers. Lighter compact units pull around 1.4kW and cost a little less; heavier 2.1kW models cost a little more, but the order of magnitude holds. These figures are for actual trigger time, not the total time you are stood in the garden.

For most households the electricity from a pressure washer is a rounding error on the annual bill, somewhere between £3 and £10 a year depending on how house-proud you are. The water cost most people forget

Here is the part that often costs more than the power. A domestic pressure washer typically moves somewhere between 5 and 10 litres of water a minute. That sounds modest, but it adds up faster than the electricity does.

If your home is on a water meter, you pay for both the water in and the wastewater charge out, which together in much of the UK come to roughly £3 to £4 per 1,000 litres (1 cubic metre). Take a machine flowing 7 litres a minute for 20 minutes of trigger time:

  • 7 litres x 20 minutes = 140 litres
  • 140 litres at about £3.50 per 1,000 litres = around 49p of water

So in that example the water costs roughly three times the electricity. Over a long fence-and-decking session you can easily use 400 to 500 litres, which is more than a pound of water on top of about 30p of power. If you are on unmetered water you pay a fixed annual charge instead, so the water is effectively free at the point of use, but the electricity figures above still apply. Either way, a pressure washer uses far less water than a running hose for the same cleaning job, because the high pressure does the work the volume would otherwise have to.

Reading the label and the wattage on yours

The headline number on the box can be confusing because manufacturers like to advertise the pressure, measured in bar or PSI, rather than the power. Pressure tells you how hard the water hits the surface; it does not tell you what the machine draws from the socket.

For running cost you want the input power in watts or kilowatts, which you will find on the rating plate, a small label usually on the body of the unit near the cable or on the underside. If it is given in amps, multiply by 230 to get watts. For example, 7.8A x 230 is about 1,800W, or 1.8kW.

  • Pressure (bar or PSI): cleaning power, not energy use
  • Flow rate (litres per minute): drives your water cost
  • Input power (watts or kilowatts): the number your electricity meter sees, use this for cost

Pressure washers do not carry the familiar A-to-G energy label you see on fridges and washing machines, so there is no efficiency grade to compare. Petrol and standby: two side notes

A few pressure washers, mostly the heavy-duty and contractor models, run on petrol rather than mains electricity. There the fuel replaces the unit rate entirely. A small petrol engine might burn around 1 litre an hour, so at roughly 159p a litre for petrol in mid 2026 that is about £1.59 an hour, several times the cost of the electric equivalent. For occasional garden use, an electric machine is much cheaper to run as well as quieter and lighter.

On standby, the good news is that most electric pressure washers have a genuine mechanical off switch and draw nothing at all when switched off. They have no clock or display sitting awake in the background. The only thing to watch is leaving the machine switched on but idle with the motor cutting in and out, which wastes a trickle and is hard on the pump, so flick it off at the unit between jobs. The bottom line

A pressure washer is cheap to run on electricity. Expect roughly 8p for a car wash, around 16p for a patio, and well under £10 a year of power for typical household use, based on the 26.11p price cap rate for July to September 2026. The motor noise makes it feel costly, but the short run times and trigger-only operation keep the bill tiny.

The cost worth keeping an eye on is the water, if you are metered. On a long session the water you spray can quietly outrun the electricity, so think about catching rainwater in a butt for the dirty jobs and saving the mains for the rinse. Beyond that, there is very little to save here. Switch it off at the unit between jobs, use the right nozzle so you finish faster, and spend your energy-saving effort on the bigger items on your bill instead.
