How much does it cost to run a gaming PC?

A gaming PC is one of the hungriest things you can plug into a wall socket at home, and the spread is huge. A modest build sipping 150 watts costs pennies an hour, while a high-end rig with a flagship graphics card can pull more power than a small electric heater. The number on your bill depends on three things: how many watts the machine actually draws while you play, how many hours you sit at it, and what you pay per unit of electricity. Get a feel for all three and you can put a real yearly figure on your hobby.

The short answer. Most UK gaming PCs draw between 200 and 500 watts while gaming. At the July 2026 price cap of 26.11p per kWh, that is roughly 5p to 13p an hour. Game for two hours a day and a mid-range rig (around 350W) costs about £67 a year. A high-end machine run hard can easily top £150 a year.

What a gaming PC actually draws

The headline number people quote is the power supply rating, often 650W, 850W or even 1000W. That is the maximum the PSU can deliver, not what the machine pulls. Real draw at the wall is usually well below it, and it swings constantly depending on what is on screen.

Three states matter:

  • Idle or desktop: browsing, email, video. Most gaming PCs sit at 50W to 100W here.
  • Gaming load: the figure that drives your bill. Mid-range builds land around 250W to 400W. High-end builds with a top graphics card and a power-hungry processor can hit 500W to 700W.
  • Capped or light gaming: older or less demanding titles, or a frame-rate cap, can pull the same machine down to 150W to 250W.

The graphics card is the single biggest factor. A budget card might add 115W under load, while a flagship card alone can draw 400W or more. What it costs per hour and per year

Once you know roughly how many watts your PC pulls while gaming, the maths is simple. Watts divided by 1,000 gives kilowatts, and kilowatts multiplied by the unit rate gives the cost per hour. The table below uses the standard UK rate and three typical gaming loads, costed at two hours of gaming a day.

Two hours a day is a fair average for a working adult. A teenager on weekends and school holidays, or anyone gaming four or five hours a day, can more than double these figures. A high-end rig run hard for four hours a day works out close to £270 a year, which is more than most fridge-freezers cost to run.

Don't forget the monitor and the rest of the desk

The tower is only part of the bill. Everything else on the desk adds up, and it is easy to overlook.

  • Monitor: a 27-inch screen draws 25W to 45W. A large high-refresh or HDR panel can pull 60W or more, and dual-monitor setups double it.
  • Speakers, amp, mic, lighting: RGB strips, a powered speaker set and a stream deck can add another 20W to 50W between them.

Add a 40W monitor to a 350W mid-range build and the gaming draw is really 390W, which nudges the yearly cost up by around £8 at two hours a day. Not huge, but worth knowing when you compare your machine against the figures other people quote, which usually ignore the screen.

Standby and idle: the cost you pay when you aren't playing

The hours you are not gaming still cost money if the machine is left on. A PC idling at the desktop at 70W, left running 24 hours a day, costs about £160 a year on its own before you play a single game. Many people leave the tower on overnight or all day for downloads, updates or simply out of habit.

Sleep mode cuts this to a few watts, and full shutdown to almost nothing apart from a trickle to the motherboard. One common myth is that shutting down and starting up wears the machine out or uses a big spike of power. Neither is true for a modern PC. The startup surge lasts a fraction of a second and is trivial next to an hour of idling. Sleep or shut down whenever you walk away for more than a short break.

Ways to bring the cost down

You do not need to game less to spend less. A few settings changes make a real difference to the watts without hurting the experience much.

  • Cap your frame rate. If your monitor is 60Hz or 144Hz, capping frames to match stops the graphics card running flat out to push frames you can never see. This alone can cut gaming draw by 20 per cent or more.
  • Enable an undervolt. Many modern graphics cards and processors run cooler and quieter on slightly less voltage with no real loss of performance. It is the biggest lever after the frame cap.
  • Turn down to where it counts. Dropping from ultra to high settings often halves the power draw for a difference you will struggle to spot in motion.
  • Use sleep aggressively. Set the PC and monitor to sleep after a few idle minutes.
