It surprises people, but a modern dishwasher run sensibly often uses less hot water and energy than washing the same dishes by hand under a running tap. The machine is efficient by design. Where waste creeps in, it is almost always in how the machine is loaded and which programme is chosen, not in the machine itself. Why the machine can beat the sink
The instinct that hand-washing must be cheaper comes from thinking the machine is a big power-hungry appliance. In practice it is the water heating that costs money in both methods, and the machine is careful with hot water in a way a running tap is not.
A dishwasher heats a precise, small amount of water and recirculates it around the load, using the same water again and again through the cycle. Washing up by hand under a running tap pours hot water away continuously, and most people use far more than they think. Filled properly and run on the right programme, the machine does a full load on less hot water than the sink method, and since the energy to heat that water is the main cost either way, the machine usually wins.
The hand-wash only comes out ahead if you are genuinely frugal, washing in a single bowl of water rather than under a running tap, and even then it is close. Use eco mode and wait for a full load
The single biggest saving is the eco programme. The longer run time puts people off, but the machine is doing the work, not you, so the only cost is patience.
Just as important, run the machine only when it is full. A half-empty load uses nearly as much water and energy as a full one, so every part-load is money wasted. Skip the pre-rinse

Modern dishwashers and detergents cope fine with scraped, unrinsed plates. The detergent enzymes actually need some food residue to work against. So:
- Scrape the leftovers into the bin or compost.
- Load the plates as they are, without rinsing.

The pre-rinse habit is a hangover from older, weaker machines that genuinely could not cope. Today's machines do not need it, and skipping it can save a surprising amount of hot water over a year. Timing the run and the cycle you choose

The first is when you run it. If you are on a flat tariff, the time of day makes no difference to the cost, only to your convenience. But if you are on an Economy 7 or time-of-use tariff with cheaper overnight electricity, running the machine on its delay timer during the cheap window cuts the cost of every load. The second is resisting the quick wash. A fast cycle sounds efficient because it is over sooner, but it gets the job done by using more, hotter water in less time, so it usually draws more energy than the slow eco programme, not less. One last point on heat. If your machine has an option to open the door at the end and air-dry rather than run a hot drying phase, use it.
