A ceiling fan is one of the cheapest ways to feel cooler in summer, and for most of the year it can also help spread warm air in winter. The headline question is simple though: does the comfort justify the installation cost and the electricity it draws? The good news is that a ceiling fan uses very little power, far less than the plug-in fan you might already own and a tiny fraction of what an air conditioner pulls. What a ceiling fan costs to run
A ceiling fan moves air with a slow, large blade, which is why it sips power compared with a small fan that has to spin fast. Most domestic ceiling fans land somewhere between 25 and 75 watts depending on the motor type and the speed setting. To turn watts into pennies, divide the wattage by 1,000 to get kilowatts, then multiply by the unit rate.
At 26.11p per kWh, a 50W fan costs 50 divided by 1,000, which is 0.05kW, times 26.11p, which works out at about 1.3p an hour. Leave it on for a long evening and you are still well under 10p.

AC motor versus DC motor: does it matter for your bill?
Older and cheaper ceiling fans use an AC motor. Newer premium fans use a DC motor, which is more efficient and typically draws around 60 per cent less power at the same airflow. A DC fan might pull 30W where an AC fan pulls 70W for similar cooling.
On paper that sounds like a big saving, but because the running cost is already so low, the cash difference is small. Over a full summer the gap between the two might be £5 to £10. A DC fan can carry a price premium of £100 or more, so you would wait many years for the electricity saving alone to repay it.
That does not mean DC is pointless. The real reasons people choose DC are quieter running, more speed settings, a remote, and often a reverse function for winter. If you value silence in a bedroom, the upgrade can be worth it for comfort rather than for the bill. If you just want cheap cooling in a living room, a decent AC fan is perfectly fine.
How a ceiling fan compares with other cooling
The point of a fan is not to lower the air temperature. It cannot do that. It moves air across your skin so sweat evaporates faster and you feel several degrees cooler. That is why a fan only helps when someone is in the room, and why you should switch it off when you leave.

The hidden winter benefit
Many ceiling fans have a reverse switch. In winter, set the blades to push air upward at low speed. This nudges the warm air that has collected near the ceiling back down into the room without creating a draught you can feel. In a room with a high ceiling, that can let you turn the thermostat down a touch while staying just as comfortable.
The fan still only costs a penny or two an hour to run, and any heating saving comes from your gas or electric heating, which is far more expensive per unit. So even a small reduction in heating use can outweigh the fan's own running cost. It is a marginal gain rather than a transformative one, but it is genuinely useful in tall rooms, conservatories and converted lofts. Pair it with sensible thermostat settings for the best effect.
The fitting cost and whether it pays off
Because the electricity is so cheap, the decision really comes down to the up-front cost. A basic AC ceiling fan can be bought for well under £100. A quiet DC fan with a remote and a light usually costs more. On top of that you may need an electrician, especially if there is no existing ceiling rose with the right wiring or the joists need a fixing point that can carry the weight and vibration safely.

That is a far better deal than buying and storing a portable air conditioner you only switch on twice a year.
